On October 9th, a group members went to the De Nolet Distillery in Schiedam for a remarkable tour. Established in 1691, it is the oldest distillery in the Netherlands still owned by the founding family. They produce vodkas and the most famous is the brand “Ketel 1.”
Upon arriving, the ladies entered the facilities through the landmark windmill which is a reconstruction of a typical Dutch style windmill. The tour was around two hours where they went from start to finish in the distillery process for vodka. The ladies visited the modern distillery where they witnessed the production using traditional methods and techniques, including the use of large copper kettle pots and charcoal fires. The cooper kettle pots are where the name “Ketel 1” came from for their famous brand.
Since their launch into the US market in the 1980s, Ketel 1 vodka is a very popular and successful brand. Several other flavors have more recently been launched with much success. The tour guide was very excited to have a couple Americans in our group to chat with. And luckily our members are all too familiar with Ketel 1!
At the end of the tour, each lady received a wonderful gift bag with several bottles of vodka in various sizes and types. It was a very popular tour among the members and one to add to your list of things to do in the Netherlands!
