Villa Mattemburgh
On Thursday 15 June six members of IWC visited the Villa Mattemburgh estate near Bergen op Zoom. We were taken on a guided tour through the beautiful gardens and the Neoclassical country house by a very knowledgeable guide. We heard interesting and entertaining stories about the villa and the people that lived and worked on the estate. The anecdotal stories added an extra layer of historical patina to the visit.
Our visit concluded with lunch at the Villa Oranjerie.

During the tour we learned that at one point in time the estate was home to black swans. The swans can be seen today in the details of the Villa. Even the artistic taps pay homage to the swans. It is interesting to note that the beautiful and famous flower beds obtain all their colour from the leaves of the plants. If you look closely you will see that these beds are void of flowers.
