From Garden to Table at the Hooge Raam

On a sunny day in June we visited the Perma Garden and Food Forest at the Hooge Raam in Haaren.

It is run by enthusiastic married couple Tiny & John Vermeer.

While enjoying coffee with a homemade snack we got an introduction on their garden and the philosophy behind it.

After this it was time for a further exploration of what there was growing, and this, for sure, was plenty!

The diversity of what they are growing is amazing and a lot of what we saw and tasted was unknown to us.

We tasted leaves from the onion soup tree, as well as leaves from the lime tree. The first ones really tasted like soup and the latter you can use in a salad.

All sorts of flowers and berries were also on the menu. The Szechuan peppers that they also grow happily passed.

It was a wonderful garden to wander through and combined with the enthusiastic stories of our host John, made for a very successful afternoon.
