Our planned July activity was a great success, with 25 members taking part in this enjoyable excursion.
On 22th July we visited De Weervisserij, an organisation dedicated to preserving the centuries-old tradition of anchovy fishing. This unique fishing method has been part of the history of Bergen op Zoom for more than 350 years, with records even dating back to the Middle Ages.
Although the weather was rather chilly, we had a wonderful day. We learned a great deal about this traditional craft and enjoyed watching the fisherman, together with one of our own members , haul in the nets.
Unfortunately, there are no longer any anchovies in the Oosterschelde. Since the construction of the Delta Works, combined with rising water temperatures, the Oosterschelde has changed from an estuary into a saltwater sea inlet. As a result, the water has become more saline, temperatures have increased, and there are no longer enough nutrients to provide a suitable breeding ground for anchovies.
The day offered something for everyone. Before the visit, several members enjoyed lunch in Tholen, while others rounded off the day with an oyster tasting in Yerseke.
With 25 members participating, the excursion was a great success. It was an interesting, educational, and enjoyable day, and everyone returned home with a greater appreciation of this remarkable piece of Dutch heritage.
